About
The aim of this website has been to collate then share Stencl’s Yiddish literary magazine Loshn un Lebn (1940-1981). This celebrated magazine, printed by Narod Press in London, and edited by the Polish-born Yiddish poet A.N. Stencl (1897-1983) was the longest running foreign language journal in the U.K.
This archive project began in 2023 by identifying, collating, and digitising these magazines from private and public collections. Copies are free to downloaded from this website along with English summaries of the content within. During this project online and in-person events were piloted, with an international audience of Yiddish speakers young and old, who were invited to come together and contribute to discussions of the content within as well as sharing their own recollections of Stencl and his magazine. Recordings of these events can be found in the events section of this website. If you have memories of Stencl to share or any further copies of Loshn un Lebn we would love to hear from you. Please contact r.lichtenstein@mmu.ac.uk.
This website also shares other outcomes of Rachel Lichtenstein’s collaborative produced interdisciplinary research on Stencl in the events section of this website.
