The Loshn un lebn Journals
This project has digitised an almost entire collection of Stencl’s Yiddish literary journals, including his earlier hetflekh (pamphlets) published between 1940 and 1946. The earliest pamphlets of just a few pages, mainly featured Stencl’s war poems. They were printed by Narod Press in Whitechapel who printed all subsequent issues for the next forty years being great supporters of the Yiddish poet. From January 1946, the magazine became known as Loshn un lebn (Language & Life) it ran almost continuously every month until 1981. Around 325 issues were published although exact numbers are uncertain as the early pamphlets were inconsistently numbered. Thanks to numerous institutions and individuals, the project has tracked down, digitised, and shared 309 issues here. Combined this represents the largest freely accessible digitised collection of these Yiddish magazines. Because these copies come from multiple sources, there are variations in quality and format. For example some rare early issues only survive as photocopies. Each journal has been scanned as found, the colour and appearance has not been altered. Some editions, particularly those from private collections, include Stencl’s own handwritten annotations and notes adding to their distinctiveness. We hope you enjoy exploring this special collection. If you use these digital resources for your own work please do let us know we would love to hear about it. If you have any of the extremely rare missing volumes and would like to share them here do get in touch.
