Loshn un Lebn Content May 1955 to December 1959

Until recently, only a small fraction of the millions of Yiddish words printed in these rare literary journals had ever been translated into English. Thanks to the British Academy, translator Lena Watson has been able to work with our team to create an English-language index of the journals’ content pages, opening a window into the vibrant content within these journals for English speakers for the first time. These content pages reveal voices from across the Yiddish-speaking world; writers, poets, and essayists reflecting on everything from assimilation and the Holocaust to the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, Jewish art, Soviet politics, and life in wartime London and many other subjects besides. The journals also featured local cultural news, like the Saturday Afternoon Yiddish meetings in Whitechapel, and tributes to major Yiddish figures such as Izrael Zangwill and Sholem Aleichem. Even if you don’t read Yiddish, we invite you to explore this fascinating catalogue: a powerful record of Jewish cultural life, resilience, and creativity.
